Dear Parent/Guardian,
I would like to welcome you to room G14. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with you and your child this year. I am positive it will be a wonderful and challenging year for all of us. This year, your child will be working with the Common Core Standards in Mathematics, Reading and Writing, which have been adopted by 48 states nationwide in addition to the Delaware Standards for Science and Social Studies.
As your child’s teacher, I want him/her to enjoy coming to school each day. I want to make your child’s classroom environment a pleasant one filled with rich experiences, home-school connections, many achievements and lasting friendships.
In order to accomplish these tasks, I feel that it is extremely important to develop and maintain strong communication with you throughout the year. Our interaction is essential to your child’s education, both academically and behaviorally. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me by note, email or telephone. I can be reached by telephone at 302-832-6300x3014. Please leave a message if I am unavailable and I will return your phone call. My email is [email protected]. This is the best way to communicate. You can view our current progress and any pertinent information pertaining to our classroom on my website at http://bowerskindergartners.edublogs.org.

G-14 Classroom Management Plan
Discipline:
Throughout the year, I will use discipline to maintain a positive classroom environment. Although my classroom has a flexible learning environment, using the Love and Logic approach, I still have consequences that will be incorporated as needed. Our class will be using Class Dojo this year. This program is an interactive way to monitor behavior using both positive and negative opportunities throughout the school day. The students can earn positive points for showing expected behaviors or negative points for showing negative behaviors. The end of the day results will be noted in their folders on the calendar and an overview will be printed or emailed. If you would like the report emailed, please let me know.
Rewards:
In G14, positive behavior is recognized and reinforced. I believe that it is important to provide positive reinforcement whenever allowed (especially if negative has been given previously). Students will receive intrinsic and extrinsic rewards throughout the school year including: stickers, praise, commendations, treats, special seating and several additional privileges. I feel these rewards are important because it allows your child to shine.
I feel your child deserves the best educational environment possible; therefore please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your help!
School Policies and Procedures
School Hours- Arrival and Dismissal Procedures: The school hours are from 8:27 am to 3:19 pm. Children will not be allowed to enter the building before 8:15 am. Children are allowed to report to their classrooms at 8:20 am. Please be on time for school! Everyone coming in later than 8:45 is considered tardy, and will need a late pass from the office. We dismiss starting at 3:19. Car riders are dismissed at the front of the school, in the multipurpose room. If your child is going to go home with a friend or relative, you must send in a written note. If we do not receive a written note, they will be sent home as I was instructed.
Attendance- Please call the school and send in a note to school if your child will be or is absent for any reason. Any work missed will be sent home. Please remember compulsory attendance laws do apply to kindergarten students, and they must be in attendance 90% of the days we have school. Although every school day matters, we still recommend that your student is fever free for 24 hours before returning to school when ill. If they are taking medications for an illness, these medications must be turned into the nurse at the start of the school day. Should your child become ill during the day, they will be sent to the school nurse.
Transportation- On days that you need to change how your child is going home, it is important that you ALWAYS send a note and call the school so that appropriate arrangements can be made. A student may not go home in a different manner without a note or call to the school! Thank you for your help in ensuring our student’s safety!
Breakfast/Lunch- All students are allowed to eat breakfast in the mornings. If they are getting breakfast, they must go to the cafeteria prior to entering the classroom. Students may either get a lunch from school, or bring a lunch from their home. This school year, Southern will be providing free breakfast and lunch to all students.

Important Things to Know:
Toys- Except for curriculum-based reasons, I request that all toys be left at home. Your child will receive a note in their folder when we are doing activities that will require the children to bring toys to school.
Morning Meeting- Everyday your child will participate in a morning meeting. This is a community building time of day where the children greet each other, share their experiences, participate in a short activity and read a morning message. This is done first thing in the morning.
Common Core- Our instruction is centered on the Common Core Standards for Language Arts and Math. These standards have been created by the Department of Education for all educators in 48 states to align their instruction. You can access these standards by visiting the state website at www.corestandards.org.
Discovery Phonics- This is a labor-intensive program where the children will be introduced to sight words (Most Common Words/Fry Words), sounds, letters and writing. The children will be writing sentences. They will be exposed to differentiating between vowels and consonants.
TERC- Our math program is a problem solving inquiry-based program. The students are learning how to solve problems using pictorial representations and various strategies.
LFS- Your child will be bringing home learning maps for Language Arts and Math. These maps are designed to provide a map of learning for teachers, parents and students.
Science- We will be teaching three units throughout the year. The students will be learning about trees, wood and paper and our new STEM unit, Push, Pull, Go. This unit integrates technology, engineering and math with science.
Social Studies- Horizons is a citizenship-building program. The students will learn about themselves, maps, their country, their community and global issues.
